Roston Chase is reflecting on legacy as he takes on the job of captaining West Indies in Tests. In his new role, he follows in the footsteps of Frank Worrell, Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards. But Chase is also thinking of his own personal journey to Test captaincy, having once being served a two-year ultimatum by his mother to show he can make a career out of cricket. It was the love for cricket that drove him, he said. Now a 33-year-old Test allrounder with 49 Test matches under his belt, Chase remembers what it was like for him at 18, just trying to make his way in the Barbados team, for whom he eventually made his debut at that age.”I was a student at the University of West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill at the time, and I would be taking a lot of leave to go and play like in the first-class competition,” Chase said. “I wasn’t cemented in the Barbados team at that stage. So my mother encouraged me, but gave me an ultimatum that I will be given two years to make myself a permanent fixture in the Barbados team or I will have to go to school permanently.Related

“I loved cricket more than school. I was always a good student, but cricket was my love. I worked hard, and I’m glad that she gave me that ultimatum because that really was the driving force for me to carry my cricket to the next level.”Chase’s father, too, had been instrumental in driving his career, he said. “He would come and watch all my games, and talk to me about the game, [like] where I need to improve or I need to work on – the dos and don’ts.”West Indies’ Test schedule is lighter than most others these days, but Chase captains the side, that, in the 1980s, was arguably the best that ever played the longest form of cricket. He feels the weight of that history.”Captaining the West Indies is a great job to have, and there’s a legacy attached to it,” he said. “Playing for the West Indies means everything to me, so I’m ready for the responsibilities which come with the job.”Chase has not played a Test since March 2023, but was appointed captain following a “detailed assessment process”, according to Cricket West Indies.West Indies only have 13 Tests scheduled in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Other than that, they have a non-WTC Test pencilled in against Afghanistan, in 2027. Chase’s first assignment as Test captain will be the three-match home series against Australia, which begins in Bridgetown on June 25.

Better dribbler than Yamal: Liverpool readying £65m offer to sign "electric" star

With Mohamed Salah on course to leave the club in 2027, Liverpool are reportedly preparing a big-money offer to sign an impressive winger who’s an even better dribbler than Lamine Yamal.

Players who could replace Salah at Liverpool

Replacing Salah is an impossible task at Anfield, but Liverpool will have no choice but to get as close as they can to doing exactly that when 2027 arrives and the Egyptian’s contract comes to an end.

He will go down as one of their greatest players of all time, sitting alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish, alongside Steven Gerrard and others. That’s the level that the Reds will have to replace.

Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are always up for a transfer challenge, however, and have already reportedly set their sights on Michael Olise to replace one of the best Premier League wingers of all time.

The Bayern Munich star wouldn’t be a bad option in the slightest. He has reached a new level on the big stage and could be destined to return to English football with a bang.

Although a different type of player to goalscorer Salah, Liverpool could look towards a creative type rather than a player of the Egyptian’s ilk now that they’ve got an out-and-out No.9 in Alexander Isak.

Rather than replacing Salah’s goals with one player, it seems as though those at Anfield have commenced their plan to duplicate their star man in the aggregate.

That means that Olise isn’t the only one in Liverpool’s sights. Instead of signing the Frenchman, reports are now suggesting that the Reds are ready to make an offer for an impressive La Liga star.

Liverpool readying Williams offer

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now readying a €75m (£65m) offer to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club. The Spain international has found himself on their radar even after signing a new contract instead of joining Barcelona in the summer.

Whilst that £65m fee may seem like a hefty price, it is still below Williams’ reported €90m (£78m) release clause. If Liverpool are serious about securing his signature, then they may have no choice but to spend big once again rather than eyeing a cut-price deal.

Beating defenders at a better rate than Yamal, one of the world’s best wingers, Williams is not someone to be overlooked. Having been praised as “electric” by analyst Ben Mattinson, the 23-year-old is a star in waiting and needs that big move to arrive.

He stayed loyal to Athletic Club in the summer, but Liverpool must test that loyalty when 2026 arrives and Salah enters the final year of his current contract at Anfield.

Tawanda Muyeye scorches Essex with scintillating maiden hundred

Opener goes top of Blast run-scoring charts as Kent crush hosts at Chelmsford

Tawanda Muyeye cemented himself as the leading run-scorer in the Men’s Vitality Blast 2025 with a jaw-dropping maiden T20 century as Kent Spitfires tore rivals Essex apart.Muyeye became Kent’s eighth T20 hundred-maker, with the club’s joint-most sixes in an innings as he hoisted his bat on a stunning 58-ball 100.He and opening partner Daniel Bell-Drummond are the only two players to reach three figures in this year’s competition, with Muyeye’s 362 runs leading the charts.Matt Parkinson’s first T20 five-wicket haul pulled the rug out under Essex’s doomed chase of 214 as they were bowled out for 172, despite Dean Elgar’s patient 50 and Simon Harmer’s late pyrotechnics in scoring 55.Essex wanted to chase, and started strongly with the ball with three tight overs before Muyeye swung Harmer for two sixes in a row to begin his assault on Chelmsford. He put on 71 with Bell-Drummond for the first wicket, 76 with Joe Denly and 43 with captain Sam Billings – all got starts, but there was only one star of the show. There is no secret that Muyeye is one of the most aesthetically pleasing batters on the circuit. His quick hands, paired with a long backswing, caught the eye, but it was the power that had the hosts scrambling. He fired seven sixes in total into the balmy sky, equalling the record for Kent, plus six hammered fours.Muyeye quickly moved to the top of the Blast run-scoring charts for this season, and made a play to stay there for the rest of the campaign, with a half-century ticked off in 32 balls and his ton in 58.In doing so he joined an esteemed and exclusive list of Kent T20 centurions – Denly, Bell-Drummond, Billings, Zak Crawley, Azhar Mahmood, Sam Northeast, and Andrew Symonds being the other inductees. He might have controlled a full toss straight to long-off next ball, but the damage was done. Kent reached 219, with Shane Snater, Harmer and Luc Benkenstein picking up a wicket each, although Mohammad Amir was the only bowler to go at under sevens.A bumper Friday night crowd resorted to gallows humour when Elgar finally found the boundary with the 20th ball of the innings, having already seen Tom Rogers skip one past Michael Pepper.Things heated up later in the third over when Jordan Cox swung and missed. Wicketkeeper Billings threw the ball at the stumps, missed and hit his former team-mate. Cox responded by kicking the ball away and verbals were exchanged at close quarters.Cox punted the following delivery down the ground for four, but the spat ended when Billings gave Cox a send-off after skying to long-on.Parkinson, who had dismissed Cox, then bowled Paul Walter with legspinning perfection with the next ball, but squandered a hat-trick with a leg-side wide.Parkinson added a third when Benkenstein stuck one straight up and another as Matt Critchley found the deep point fielder.Elgar had quietly amassed his 16th T20 fifty, but he was bowled by another Parkinson beauty, the spinner ending up with 5 for 23. Charlie Allison, Noah Thain, Shane Snater and Harmer also fell – with Joey Evison taking two in two at one point. While Essex remain the sole winless side in either group, Harmer entertained the crowd with seven sixes once the match was mathematically lost – he smacked 55 in 21 balls.

Wayne Rooney reveals difference in Liverpool-Man Utd rivalry in 3 brutal words

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has brilliantly described what makes his former club’s rivalry with Liverpool different from others in three words.

Slot looking forward to Liverpool-Man Utd clash

The biggest fixture in English football dominates the weekend’s Premier League matches, with the Red Devils making the trip to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

It promises to be the next great chapter in a huge rivalry between the two clubs, and speaking ahead of the match, Reds boss Arne Slot assessed a much-anticipated occasion.

“I look forward to every single Premier League game but maybe even more towards the United one, because I know how special it is and I’ve experienced last season how special a game it is. We know that it’s probably the game that’s been watched the most all over the world. It’s special to be part of it but in the end it’s also a game where we have to be at our best, because United, in my opinion, has had a better start of the season than maybe the league table is showing.

“A very interesting game and a game to look forward to, especially because it’s played at Anfield. I think our fans have been so supportive for us as long as I’m here and long before I was here. I think they understand that the team that has lost three times in a row, they need to be ready, our team, but I think our fans can help us and will help us on Sunday as well.”

Rooney perfectly nails Man Utd-Liverpool rivalry in three words

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show [via Rousing The Kop], Rooney explained the “deep, deep hatred” that exists between Manchester United and Liverpool, and why that makes it different to the Merseyside derby with Everton.

Rooney is spot on in his assessment, with family members supporting both Liverpool and Everton, giving the rivalry a little less nastiness, even though the Merseyside pair still clearly dislike each other.

With United, it is different, though, with the two clubs having respect for what they’ve achieved throughout history, but also detesting each other most of the time, and wanting to get one over the other every time they play, with bragging rights unrivalled in the English game.

Sunday’s clash at Anfield will be no different, and for the Red Devils, they know that victory would put a major dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes.

Gary Neville's hilarious Liverpool claim in 2023 continues to haunt him

This is one of his worst!

ByHenry Jackson Sep 21, 2025

On the flip side, a Reds victory would heap further pressure on Ruben Amorim, especially if they lose heavily, so there is an enormous amount to play for this weekend, as always.

Bat down, hunger up: Smith ready for Lord's after American reset

Smith, who turned 36 last week, stayed away from cricket for three months till very recently

Andrew McGlashan08-Jun-20252:58

Finch: Australia’s batting gives them the edge over SA

Some players were at the IPL. Others were in county cricket. Those at home trained in Brisbane. Steven Smith, meanwhile, spent time in New York and picked up a bat for the first time in three months just a few days ago. Then he promptly walked out of his first net session and told head coach Andrew McDonald: “Can we play tomorrow, I’m ready to go.”The Australia set-up allows players to tailor preparation to what they want and when you’ve scored over 10,000 Test runs you can be trusted to know what’s best. But for a batting obsessive like Smith, not picking up the willow for so long still went against the grain as they didn’t see the light of day while he was in America where he worked extensively on a fitness regime with a new personal trainer. Smith, who turned 36 last week, said he probably hasn’t been as strong since 2014 and that improved mobility in his hips could aid him in the slips.”I’d normally have a bat laying around the house somewhere and just pick it up and do a bit of shadow batting and stuff,” he said. “But I made a conscious decision to try and just let it go for a while. It was good.Related

Boland: 'I just want to make their decision as hard as possible'

“I hadn’t hit a ball since I missed a full toss off Mohammed Shami in the Champions Trophy. Fortunately, everything sort of clicked into place immediately. I feel like I’m moving really well, I feel strong and just ready to get into it now.”Normally how it works is my first hit’s good, my second hit’s awful, and then I’d get better from there. But both hits were just really good and I was like, hopefully it doesn’t turn around now and I don’t have to spend hours in the nets the next couple of days.”It helps that Smith excels batting in England where he has a Test average of 55.00. In the 2023 World Test Championship final against India he made 121. At Lord’s, his average is 58.33 and in his last Test at the ground he made a century.Smith noted the extra bounce that was on offer from the centre wicket at Beckenham where Australia had their initial training block – “almost felt like we were playing at Perth stadium,” he said – and expecting something a little different when preparations shift to Lord’s on Sunday.”I play a lot of back foot shots here, I don’t tend to get too far forward to the ball. I try and score really square of the wicket,” he said. “It kind of just suits me in a way. Hopefully can kick off where I left off the last couple of Tests that we played [in Sri Lanka].”After his century at Lord’s in the 2023 Ashes, Smith went 23 innings until the next, the longest wait of his career, which included his brief time as an opener. Then he went on a surge against India and Sri Lanka with four centuries in eight innings with some of his best batting since the golden 2019 Ashes in England. He admitted that the Adelaide Test against India last year, which preceded that return to form, was a rare moment where he felt the scrutiny.”I feel like I’ve been in the team for a while and I haven’t felt under a great deal of pressure,” he said. “Maybe a little bit after Adelaide last year was the most I’ve felt. And maybe [that’s] why I came out the next game and was really, really hungry to get a good score in Brisbane. But that was external talk and things cross my desk all the time. People send me things that people are saying. So I don’t know, maybe something clicked in me and I wanted to get back to the position of being a bit more comfortable again.”Smith scored 110 and 34 the last time he played at Lord’s•PA Images via Getty Images

By then, Smith had already started taking a less-is-more approach to training, something that was further crystalised by a conversation with Michael Hussey early in that same India series.”We’re a bit older, we’ve hit a lot of balls,” he said. “It’s about having that mental side as switched on as it can be for the big moments. And you don’t want to use up all your energy in the nets. There’s a fine balance, of course. I’m someone that needs to feel really prepared. And I don’t want to leave any stone unturned in my preparation so that when I go to the middle, I’m ready to play.”But I’ve also got to realise that the older you get, the mental side I think probably wears a little bit thinner on you. And you’ve got to try and be in the best space you can be in the middle to bat for long periods of time. Sometimes I might get the balance wrong. But when you’re hitting the ball well, you can sort of do what you want in terms of your preparation in a way. You can just let it be and trust that when you get to the middle, it’s all going to be okay.”There continues to be intrigue over how the closing chapter of Smith’s storied career will play out. He has retired from ODI cricket to create space for more T20 leagues – he could play two MLC games between the WTC final and Australia’s first Test in West Indies – and reiterated his desire to feature in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. After the South Africa decider, Australia’s next visit to England for Test cricket is the 2027 Ashes, part of a bumper year that also includes five Tests in India.”I’m definitely not looking that far ahead,” he said. “I’m kind of taking it day by day. While I’m enjoying it, while I’m batting nicely and feeling like I’m contributing to the team, I’m pretty happy. But that [2027] is a while away.”Which all means this could be Smith’s last Test appearance at Lord’s. “I think it’s probably, outside of Sydney, my favourite ground to play at,” he said. “The history, the surface itself. It always takes a few balls just to get used to that slope. One end you feel like you’re standing really tall, the other end you feel like you’re falling over a little bit. But the ball races away, both up the hill and down the hill.”And then the lunch is fabulous. They always say it’s a great place to miss out so you can enjoy your lunch. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the last few years I’ve done really well there, so I haven’t been able to cash in on that.”If Smith has to forego a big lunch again, that could spell bad news for South Africa.
