Watson: 'Perfect storm' for Konstas to make Test debut

The 19-year-old NSW opener has been the talk of the season so far and will feature for Australia A next week

‘Bold move to pick two youngsters in Reddy and Harshit’

Sam Konstas’ mentor Shane Watson believes circumstances have thrown up a “perfect storm” for the teen prodigy to make his Test debut in the home series against India.Konstas announced himself as a Test bolter with twin Sheffield Shield centuries for NSW earlier this month and will feature for Australia A next week alongside the out-of-form Cameron Bancroft and another previous Test opener in Marcus Harris as the selectors narrow down their options.Related

Matthew Renshaw is another with past Test experience while momentum is building behind the uncapped Nathan McSweeney and Josh Inglis is an out-of-the-box option, but with only six first-class games to his name, 19-year-old Konstas has also been considered as a bold option to partner Usman Khawaja at the top.Watson said selectors need only look to the player Konstas would replace for proof rare talents must be given early chances at Test cricket. Injured allrounder Cameron Green made his Test debut at 21 on India’s last tour of Australia, having been earmarked as a prodigy playing Sheffield Shield for Western Australia.Watson felt the age of the current playing group was further evidence of the need to inject young blood; there is no player younger than 30 who both played in Australia’s last Test match in March and is fit for the summer.”The whole situation is, in my mind, a perfect storm to be able to give him an opportunity to be able to play Test cricket,” Watson told AAP. “For me, this is an opportune time, knowing that the bowlers are aging, there’s Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja as a starting point who are aging.”They’ve still obviously got a lot of great cricket in front of them. But the one thing Australian cricket always did incredibly well was see someone who is different from all the younger stars coming through and get them into the Australian set-up, as early as they can within reason, to be able to help them learn.”Sam Konstas was presented his NSW cap by Shane Watson last season•Getty Images

Current captain Pat Cummins memorably became the second-youngest Australian debutant in Test history when the then-18-year-old earned a first baggy green on the 2011 tour of South Africa, while Konstas’ batting predecessors Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh were both given the nod at 20.Watson himself can vouch for the benefits of earning international experience early, having first played ODI cricket as a 20-year-old.”There’s no doubt that my one-day cricket would never have evolved to the heights that it did without me being around the Aussie team [at a younger age],” said Watson, who went on to play in Australia’s 2007 and 2015 World Cup triumphs.Watson has been working with Konstas for the best part of four years, having first come across him as a student at Cranbrook – the Sydney school attended by Watson’s son.He named Konstas’ single-minded dedication to his craft as his most striking attribute.”From the first moment that I met Sam, the thing that jumped out at me the most was his desperate desire to be the best that he possibly could be,” Watson said. “The first time I had a net session with him as a 16-year-old, he hits the ball differently; the shot options that he has available to him and his defence.”But then knowing how diligently he has been working on his mental game as well, it absolutely does not surprise me to see what he’s able to do.”The mental side of cricket has been of particular interest to Watson towards the end of his career and into retirement, with his book recently adapted into an online skills course through SafetyCulture.

Romano: Arsenal make contact to sign brand new target likened to Kolasinac

Arsenal have been in contact to sign a brand new target who has been compared to former Gunners defender Sead Kolasinac.

The most eye-catching signing to arrive at the Emirates has been striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has joined from Sporting CP in an initial deal worth £55m. Taking Arsenal’s famous number 14 shirt, Mikel Arteta shared his delight after Gyokeres was announced as a Gunners player.

“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.

“Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.

“We’re excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him. We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal.”

Arsenal coaches have been left stunned by Gyokeres in training, with Berta and co now on the hunt for a seventh senior signing of the summer.

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked, but another new defender after bringing in Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia is also of interest.

Arsenal make contact to sign Jeremy Jacquet

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have made initial contact over a deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet.

Any move this summer could be based on any further Emirates outgoings, with Jacquet under contract with the Ligue 1 side until 2029.

Still just 20 years of age, Jacquet has been called an “aggressive wide centre back who glides through the thirds, carrying the ball and contributing to the attack” by Football Economist.

As can be seen, the Frenchman has even been likened to former Gunners left-back Kolasinac, who is now on the books with Serie A side Atalanta.

It remains to be seen how much Jacquet could cost Arsenal, but it looks as if a deal is one to keep an eye on between now and the September 1 deadline.

New Jack Clarke: Sunderland showing interest in "sensational" £26m star

Sunderland fans would have been preparing for a new dawn this time last season as Regis Le Bris entered the Championship side’s dug-out.

Nobody would have quite anticipated, just a year on, that the Black Cats would be dining at the illustrious Premier League table for the 2025/26 campaign, with the likes of Granit Xhaka raring to go in Sunderland red and white as West Ham United travel to Wearside.

Arthur Masuaku will also be excited by the prospect of potentially lining up against his former employers on the opening day, with even more new signings expected through the door before September’s early cut-off.

Sunderland show interest in £26m forward

The hope is that the early-season performances won’t be too disjointed, as Sunderland’s ten new recruits try to hit the ground running in such a daunting division immediately.

More quality may be needed to ensure the step-up doesn’t swallow Le Bris and Co whole, with centre-back target Loic Bade one presence who could really boost the Frenchman’s options defensively, having been on Sunderland’s radar for some time now.

Loic Bade for Sevilla.

The top-flight newcomers also look set to announce Omar Alderete as their staggering 11th buy of the summer, meaning Le Bris’ centre-back options will be enhanced for definite when a £10m deal for the 28-year-old to join from Getafe is officially announced.

The attack could also be sprinkled with more quality if Sunderland secure the services of Bayer Leverkusen star Amine Adli shortly, with a report from German outlet Kicker speculating that the Black Cats hold interest in the 25-year-old winger, among other suitors.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Amine Adli.

Kicker states that both Marseille and AFC Bournemouth are also keen on landing the Leverkusen speedster, who is reportedly available for a fee around the £26m region.

With Sunderland’s excessive spending on full display all across the summer to date, this shouldn’t be an eye-watering amount to fork out for Adli, especially if he becomes Le Bris’ own version of Jack Clarke that helps Sunderland to navigate the step-up more comfortably.

How Adli could become Le Bris' own Clarke at Sunderland

Unfortunately, Clarke would hop off the Black Cats train before he could bask in the glory of a promotion.

Still, he left a lasting impact on the Stadium of Light masses during his lengthy stay on Wearside, as seen in him tallying up an impressive 28 goals and 23 assists from 114 games, even as his team regularly faltered in their hunt for a return to the top-flight.

Now, Le Bris will hope he can strike gold on another entertaining, gung-ho winger in the same mould as Clarke in Adli, with the 25-year-old already being dubbed as “electric” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig for his ability to bomb forward with ease.

Often lining up down Clarke’s trusty left-hand side, the Moroccan forward has become a staple of many a Leverkusen side since his move from Toulouse in 2021, with Adli now ready to take the English game by storm as a versatile trickster under Le Bris’ wing.

While 16 of Adli’s overall 47 goal contributions for the Bundesliga giants have been on this left flank, he will also be a valued member of the Frenchman’s camp moving forward for his prowess to line up as an attacking midfielder and as a striker if needed.

After all, Clarke also possessed this same adaptability in spurts, with two of his career goals on Wearside coming from an unusual centre-forward role.

Amine Adli in action for Bayer Leverkusen.

On top of that, Adli has had to deal with the pressures of being in the Leverkusen spotlight since a very early age, much like what Clarke had to come to terms with when lining up for Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, before coming out of the other side of these disruptive spells with Sunderland.

Further lauded as “sensational” for his direct approach by U23 scout Antonio Mango, this does feel like a signing that would really enhance an already captivating Black Cats forward line, particularly if the 25-year-old attacker goes on to be as revered as Clarke before him.

'You discover yourself in hard times' – Bavuma reflects on his Test journey

The South Africa captain is set to complete ten years in Test cricket and has asserted his desire to keep going

Firdose Moonda04-Dec-2024

A decade ago (allow us the leniency of three weeks because it was actually Boxing Day 2014), a young Temba Bavuma made his Test debut at St George’s Park to mark one of the most significant full circle moments in South Africa cricket.Bavuma, who traces his roots back to the Eastern Cape, was the first black African specialist batter for the national men’s team and represented hope and change; the former for a majority population disenfranchised by segregation and the latter for what a team of the future could look like: inclusive, representative, and accessible to all. Now, Bavuma is captain of that same team and their most senior batter. He leads a side that is in the running for their first World Test Championship (WTC) final. Like the narrative that has (perhaps unfairly) followed him from day one, he has come the full circle.Related

So, what’s changed between the Bavuma of 2014 and the Bavuma of 2024?”I’ve got less hair,” he joked at St Georges’ Park on the eve of the second Test against Sri Lanka. “In terms of the way I view the game, I see it a bit differently. When I came here as a 24-year-old, I was naive to a lot of things. Now, ten years later, having gone through the journey, the ups and downs, you appreciate things a lot more. You don’t take things for granted. And you try to find moments and memories in everything that is happening around you.”The Bavuma of 2014 entered a team filled with superstars who had already started retiring and that were about to enter a slide. They beat West Indies in his first outing, but went on to lose heavily in India, which ended a nine-year unbeaten away run, and opened up a period of uncertainty. In every year that Bavuma played, a big name called it a day.The leadership changed hands three times in the first two years from Hashim Amla to AB de Villiers to Faf du Plessis and the champion fast bowlers were battling serious injuries. South Africa slipped down the rankings and were taken less seriously as a Test team while Bavuma himself was considered a bit-part player.Temba Bavuma is airborne as he upper-cuts•Gallo Images/Getty Images

In his first eight years, he scored only one century and though most of his 20 fifties came in trying situations, numbers mattered. As did reputation. Between 2021 and 2024, he missed ten Tests through injury, was made white-ball captain and led the T20 side through two group stage exists at World Cups.Bavuma was also replaced as T20 captain and promoted to the Test leadership. Some of what Bavuma went through would have made a less steadfast cricketer walk away, but the strength of his conviction made him stay and now that he marks a decade as an international, he is glad he did.”I’ve been very grateful for the journey that I’ve been on, everything that has come with it. People always say that in hard times you really get to discover yourself, and I really do think that is true,” he said. “The one thing that hasn’t changed or won’t change is my passion and love for the game. It’s through that I’ve been able to overcome everything that has come my way. And, also there’s an ambition and a fire inside of me of certain things that I want to achieve.”One of those things must be the WTC final, which he spoke about as having put a “bigger value on Test cricket.” Another has to be hundreds. He now has three, two of them as captain. When Bavuma leads the side, he averages 54.22 which speaks to how that has brought out the best in him even as he has worked to balance the roles of skipper and senior batter.”The challenge that I’ve found as captain is separating those two. It’s important that you are able to do so,” he said. I focused a lot more on Temba the captain, to be honest, and everything that comes with it and I haven’t really given the energy and time that Temba the batter requires.”Yet the runs have come and Bavuma puts that down what time away from the game has forced him to do. “Being injured and not being able to be in the middle gave me time to kind of reflect on myself as a batter, what my goals are, how I want to go about doing my business, and obviously putting in the time and effort to do so.”Bavuma’s latest niggle is an elbow problem which kept him out of the matches in Bangladesh. He now bats with significant strapping and has had to put his beloved golf clubs down to prioritise his batting. Those are all things Bavuma is willing to do as he chases his cricketing dreams and despite being ten years in, he has promised there’s more to come.”I feel that I’ve got a couple of more years in me. Mentally, that is; physically, not too sure,” he said. “As long as I’m still enjoying the game, I’m still passionate about the game, I still get joy from seeing other guys perform and become inspired, I’ll still be well and truly on this journey.”
