Badrinath shines as South dominate second day

S Badrinath scored 97 not out as South Zone’s batsmen quickly chipped away at the 337 North Zone notched up in their first innings

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Feb-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsS Badrinath closed in on what will be his 27th first-class century•ESPNcricinfo LtdHe may only have played two Test matches, and his age may be considered a disadvantage as India looks to groom young players for the future, but it hasn’t stopped S Badrinath from being a run-machine in domestic cricket. He was as it again in the Duleep Trophy final, scoring 97 not out on the second day to ensure his side South Zone are odds-on favourites to take the first-innings lead.South are just 39 runs behind North Zone’s 337, and with Badrinath still at the wicket and plenty of batting to come, they will be aiming to take a commanding lead.Badrinath was watchful against North’s seamers, and hit just one boundary in the first 49 deliveries he faced. Once the spinners came on, he cut loose, smashing North captain Amit Mishra for a four and a six down the ground in the 39th over, before hitting him for two boundaries on the leg side. After a steady period, Badrinath accelerated again towards the end of the day, playing two glorious drives to the off-side fence off seamer Yashpal Singh. That left him on 90 with four overs still left in the day. A less experienced batsman may have gotten anxious and attempted a rash stroke, but Badrinath is no stranger to being near a first-class century – he has 26 – and he was patient enough to play out the last few overs.South’s healthy run-rate of 4.25 was aided by aggressive half-centuries by Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey. Uthappa had a strike-rate of 104.76 in his 66, and laid into North’s seamers early. Ishant Sharma, the India seamer’s, sixth over went for 14 runs as Uthappa hit him straight back over his head for four and then pulled him for six over square leg. Ishant ended up conceding 61 runs in his 13 overs on the day.Uthappa reached his half-century of 54 balls and celebrated it by hitting three consecutive boundaries off Sumit Narwal. His dismissal, though, was disappointing, as he top-edged an attempted pull off Joginder Sharma to mid off. Uthappa had been involved in an 85-run opening stand with Abhinav Mukund, who was out for 34 to Narwal.Pandey was also guilty of throwing his wicket away after a stroke-filled innings. He was severe on the spinners, striking Mishra for two sixes and hitting part-time spinner Mithun Manhas out of the attack with consecutive sixes over midwicket in his second over, and a four and a six in his next. Pandey attempted one shot too many, and lofted Narwal straight to Ishant at mid-off, when he was on 74.South were 243 for 3 at that stage, and North were denied any chance of a fightback by Badrinath, who remained solid till the end of the day. Badrinath was the top-scorer in the Ranji season in which he scored 922 runs at an average of 131.71, and appears to have carried that form over to the Duleep Trophy.North would have been satisfied with their batting performance in the first session, as they added 71 to their overnight score of 266 for 7. Joginder started by hitting R Vinay Kumar for consecutive boundaries off the first two balls of the day. Badrinath made what proved to be a successful decision to bring left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha into the attack in the eighth over of the morning. Ojha baffled Joginder with one that pitched on middle, went past the edge and hit the top of off.Overnight centurion Paras Dogra responded by taking three boundaries off the next over from Vinay Kumar, but then hit Ojha straight to mid-on to fall for 167. Narwal, who proved with his two half-centuries in the semi-final that he can be useful with the bat, hit seamer Sreenath Aravind for two fours and a six in one over, but eventually became Aravind’s third victim of the innings, losing his middle stump while attempting a slog.North had ensured they went past the 300-run mark, but the response from South left their total looking quite a few short.

Major Tanner to Spurs update

As per reliable reporter Dan Kilpatrick of The Evening Standard, there has been a big update on Tottenham Hotspur’s bid to sign Lewes starlet Ollie Tanner.

The Lowdown: Tottenham table bid…

The Athletic first broke news that Tottenham had tabled an offer on Saturday to sign the non-League sensation as they aim to beat Premier League rivals Brighton to his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tanner has been making waves for Lewes in the Isthmian League Premier Division, attracting interest from the English top flight as Spurs now aim to secure a deal for the forward.

Sharing an update on their pursuit, Kilpatrick says today could be big.

The Latest: Club chiefs set for talks…

According to the reporter, Spurs have indeed ‘made a bid’ to sign Tanner and Lewes club chiefs are ‘due to hold a board meeting’ today over whether to accept it.

Tottenham, however, are ‘not yet thought’ to have met the 19-year-old’s asking price amid ‘widespread’ interest from a number of other sides.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The teenager has attracted plenty of praise for his performances, with his manager Tony Russell calling Tanner ‘special’, and it is important that Tottenham find a like-for-like academy replacement for ex-winger Dilan Markanday.

Markanday completed a permanent move to Blackburn Rovers earlier in the window and his departure will have left a sour taste in the mouths of some within Spurs – especially going by his exceptional goal return at youth level this season.

Given Tanner’s demand across the Premier League, it is clear that he could slot into Markanday’s stead and make up the numbers as Spurs continue to nurture their prospering academy.

Spurs eye double signing in big update

As per The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is set for major backing by chairman Daniel Levy as the Lilywhites eye a £50 million double swoop before January 31.

The Lowdown: Conte makes transfer demands…

According to reliable reports, Spurs’ head coach has his sights set on improving the squad and has earmarked a list of positions to prioritise – specifically four.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alasdair Gold claims that the Italian wants to reinforce Tottenham with a right-wing-back, left-sided central defender, midfielder and striker if he wishes to transform the club.

The question with Spurs is arguably whether they can afford to grant his wishes, especially since they recently announced total club debts of £706m, but The Sun have just shared some very encouraging news.

The Latest: Conte set for Levy backing…

As per their information, Levy is ‘ready to back’ Conte with a ‘£50 million’ double swoop for both Wolves star Adama Traore and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

The Lilywhites are ‘set’ to make an improved offer for the former, while they have also joined the chase for Carlos in what could be a blow to Newcastle United’s chances of signing him.

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

Bolstering Conte’s options with the duo would certainly come as a very exciting piece of business and transfer chief Fabio Paratici may have to pull out all the stops to make it happen.

Traore, lauded as the ‘perfect fit’ for Spurs and someone who could ‘really excite’ the fans by pundit Noel Whelan, simply must be followed by Carlos who is a proven La Liga defender.

According to WhoScored, out of Tottenham’s current crop of players, only top-performing Lilywhites centre-back Eric Dier has averaged more clearances per 90 (3.8) compared to the 28-year-old (3.6).

If Paratici, Levy and Conte can make this double move happen, it would surely boost Spurs’ chances of a top four finish.

West Ham open Soucek contract talks

West Ham United have opened talks with Tomas Soucek about extending his stay at the London Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that West Ham have started negotiations with the 26-year-old midfielder regarding a new four-year deal.

The report goes on to state that, despite the fact the Czech Republic international’s current contract runs until the summer of 2024, the club’s hierarchy are keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how “important” a part of the West Ham side Soucek has become since his €21m (£17.5m) permanent signing back in the summer of 2020, the news that the club are hoping to extend the midfielder’s stay in East London is sure to have left fans buzzing.

Indeed, during his first full season with the club last term, the £42m-rated man was in remarkable form over his 38 Premier League appearances, scoring ten goals, registering one assist and creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.7 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

The defensively-minded midfielder also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, 2.7 clearances and winning 9.6 duels per fixture.

These returns saw the £67k-per-week dynamo earn a rather astonishing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as Moyes’ second-best performer in the top flight last time out – as well as seeing the 26-year-old win the club’s Hammer of the Year award.

As such, while many will be disappointed that West Ham missed out on a £50m deal to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, the news that the club are working on keeping Soucek a part of their squad for the foreseeable future – amid reported interest from both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain – is sure to have appeased the Hammers fanbase somewhat.

Fantastic Foo gives Guyana title in thriller

Jonathan Foo, the 19 year-old lower-order discovery of Chinese descent exploded in sensational fashion as wickets clattered at the other end to steal a one-wicket victory for Guyana in the Caribbean T20 final

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar01-Aug-2010
ScorecardJonathan Foo crashed Barbados’ party with a blitzy 42 off 17 balls•Anthony Harris/West Indies Cricket BoardIt was a finish befitting a big final on a night when both teams displayed nerves befitting a big final. In the end, it came down to one man who held his nerve under pressure. Jonathan Foo, the 19-year-old Guyanese discovery of Chinese descent, exploded sensationally as wickets clattered at the other end to steal victory, and a berth in the Champions League, from Barbados’ grasp.Foo arrived with his side’s hopes all but dashed. The Bajan spinners, led by Ashley Nurse, had choked Guyana’s batting. Their last four batsmen needed 59 off the last five overs but Lennox Cush and Esuan Crandon fell in quick succession. Barbados were already celebrating when Foo marked his guard for one final onslaught: Nurse was lofted over long-off but the smiles were still on the Bajan faces. Dwayne Smith was worked for fours to third man and square leg in the 18th over, but surely Guyana could not pull this off from here? Not after they lost their ninth wicket, Nurse’s fifth, with 26 required off 11.Foo responded by launching Nurse for another huge six over long-off. Barbados’ smiles were replaced by frowns now. Then came the defining moment: Nurse delivered a low full toss on leg stump, Foo smashed it high in the direction of deep midwicket where Larry Babb readied himself to take the catch that would have given Barbados the title. It was not to be – he palmed it over the ropes. The force was with Foo and Barbados had just dropped the Caribbean T20.With 11 to get off the last over, Foo smashed Javon Searles through point for two fours, reminiscent of Lance Klusener’s boundaries in World Cup semi-final. Unlike at Edgbaston, though, Foo had not come this far to return disappointed. More importantly, he had for company a calm No 11. Foo tapped a single to mid-on, giving Devendra Bishoo strike with two required off two. Searles aimed a yorker at off stump and did not miss by much, Bishoo squeezed it out to cover for one, but Sulieman Benn fumbled a regulation stop to allow a second. Foo charged back to the non-striker’s end and threw his arms aloft. The Guyanese supporters invaded the field and surrounded their hero, while Ryan Hinds, the Barbados captain, was down on the ground holding his head in despair. The dramatic denouement to the chase of 135 was preceded by a sluggish and nervy start. Guyana’s approach was confusing. They did away with the experimental line-up, which worked wonders in the semi-final, and nearly paid the price for being too conservative. Travis Dowlin, who had batted with freedom in that game, played well within himself tonight against bowling that was at best steady. Searles sprayed wides down leg side and over the batsmen’s heads, but Benn was at the batsmen from the start. He trapped Dowlin in the fourth over with an arm ball for 8 off 17 balls. Sewnarine Chattergoon did not fare any better, pottering to 9 off 15 balls before falling in Hinds’ first over. Suddenly Guyana were staring at a required-rate in excess of eight in their last 12 overs – no cause for alarm by Twenty20 standards, but not in these conditions against a determined attack.Runs came in singles until the 12th over when Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine swung Hinds for a four and a six each. Things went awry in the next over though, as Nurse got Sarwan and Christopher Barnwell to hole out. When Hinds took out Deonarine in the 14th over, Guyana had lost half their side with less than half the target achieved. Hurricane Foo, though, was about to ravage Barbados. Both teams had disregarded the conditions at the start of the game: despite the possibility of showers Barbados chose to bat, and despite the bounce and movement on offer, Guyana used offspinner Cush with the new ball. Initially Cush’s lengths were poor and Dale Richards capitalised to kick-start Barbados’ innings. Esuan got sharp movement but repeatedly bowled inswingers down the leg side.In the third over, Cush got Richards to top-edge a full toss to short third man. That brought Jonathan Carter to the crease and just like that Esuan transformed from inconsistent to unplayable. Carter rarely got bat on ball and his early troubles against Esuan set the tone for his entire innings, though, to his credit he did not throw it away. Barnwell struck after the Powerplay with a smart change of pace, foxing Kirk Edwards into an early waft.Carter played and missed often and was guilty of not rotating the strike enough. His momentum was subdued further by a short ball from Barnwell that thudded into his box and had him in strife. Alcindo Holder tried to inject urgency by coming down the track. He picked a couple of boundaries but the ploy did not work against Bishoo, and Holder holed out to deep midwicket in the 15th over. Dwayne Smith also failed under pressure, slogging Bishoo straight to Foo at long on.Barbados desperately needed to finish on a high and they succeeded by stealing 33 runs off the last three overs. Three sixes were struck in that passage of play, including a monster blow from Carlo Morris that nearly landed in the commentary box and a last-ball six over midwicket by Carter. That was after Carter had reached 50 off 60 balls, getting a couple after heaving to cow corner where Foo put him down. Unfortunately for Barbados, it was to be Foo’s only error on the night.

Spurs: Kamara could be ‘tempted’ to join

Tottenham Hotspur may be boosted in their pursuit of Marseille defender Boubacar Kamara as some promising transfer news comes out of Spain.

The Lowdown: Paratici in free agent market…

As reported, transfer chief Fabio Paratici has devised a plan to sign quality players with dwindling contracts for manager Antonio Conte as the Lilywhites set their sights on 2022 free agents.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of Paulo Dybala and Sam Johnstone, both of whom look set to leave their clubs in the summer on Bosman transfers, have been repeatedly linked with Spurs already.

Another exciting player, versatile Ligue 1 ace Kamara, could be one more freebie on Conte’s radar as a claim emerges from the continent in this last week.

The Latest: Tottenham could ‘tempt’ Kamara…

According to Spanish sources, Tottenham has emerged as a ‘possible destination’ for the 22-year-old.

It is believed that Conte’s side want to make ‘several’ additions in the next window, and their ‘sporting project’, combined with ‘economic solvency’ could be enough to ‘tempt’ Kamara into joining.

They add that the Marseille starlet would be a ‘perfect reinforcement’ for Conte as he eyes fresh faces for the ‘spinal cord’ of his team.

The Verdict: Make a move?

Valued at around £22.5 million by Transfermarkt, the fact he could sign for Spurs for free comes as a real no-brainer – with Kamara adept at playing both centre-half and in front of the back four.

He could solve two issues in one for Conte at zero cost and it is surprising that there haven’t been more links in recent links.

Kamara has been a solid and reliable performer for Marseille all season, making the joint-third most tackles per 90 out of their entire squad in Ligue 1 (2) and the second-most interceptions (1.3, WhoScored).

He also ranks in the their top six best performers domestically going by average match rating (6.86), and still very young, his best could still be yet to come.

Celtic: Hibs braced for Martin Boyle offers

Hibernian are braced to receive an offer from Celtic for winger Martin Boyle, according to The Times.

The Lowdown: Boyle at Easter Road

Boyle, described as ‘energetic’ by former boss Neil Lennon, has been on the books at Easter Road since 2015. The 29-year-old has made 264 appearances for the club during that time, scoring 63 times and registering 53 assists.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Boyle has enjoyed a fine 2021/22, contributing to 19 goals in 27 games and now holds a career-high Transfermarkt valuation of £2.25m, suggesting he is at the absolute peak of his powers.

His impressive displays appear to have caught the eye of fellow Aussie Ange Postecoglou, with links of a move to Parkhead surfacing earlier this month.

The Latest: Hibs preparing for offers

The Times shared a story in the early hours of Thursday morning, claiming Hibs are braced for offers from Celtic for Boyle.

An unnamed club from Abu Dhabi were also name-checked, with Postecoglou admitting earlier this season he is ‘well aware’ of Boyle.

The Verdict: January business not slowing up…

It seemed as if Celtic finalised the majority of their winter window business on New Year’s Eve with the acquisitions of Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda, however, it appears as if there may well be further arrivals and Michael Nicholson is not letting up.

Youngster Johnny Kenny is expected to join from Sligo Rovers, whereas permanent swoops for loanees Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota are also being discussed.

Boyle could well be the icing on the cake when it comes to the start of 2022, and the Australia international’s ability to play anywhere in attack could be extremely handy at Parkhead, adding depth in a number of positions as well as his obvious goal threat.

Bell battles to keep England on top

Bangladesh’s bowlers followed the example of their batsman at Lord’s last week, and rose to the occasion on the first day at Old Trafford with a disciplined and diligent performance, backed up by superb fielding

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller04-Jun-2010Close England 275 for 5 (Bell 87*, Prior 21*) v Bangladesh
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outShafiul Islam struck twice in the first hour to shock England’s top order•Getty ImagesBangladesh’s bowlers followed the example of their batsman at Lord’s last week, and rose to the occasion on the first day at Old Trafford with a disciplined and diligent performance, backed up by superb fielding, to deny England the chance to establish the sort of platform from which they were able to boss the first Test. Thanks to Ian Bell, who contributed another timely innings from his fruitful berth in the middle order, England were able to finish the day with their noses in front on 275 for 5, but on a firm and true surface, and in some of the best batting conditions of the summer so far, this was far from the breeze that had been anticipated when Andrew Strauss won the toss.By the time bad light brought about an early close, Bell was 87 not out from 171 balls, 13 adrift of what would be his third century in six Tests against Bangladesh. Like his 138 at Dhaka back in March, however, this was a vital innings that belied his (admittedly fading) reputation for soft runs, and without it, England could well have been in some trouble. After their floundering performance with the ball at Lord’s, Bangladesh had chosen to purge their seam attack, with Robiul Islam and Rubel Hossain both discarded, and into the fray came the impressive Shafiul Islam, who struck twice in an incisive new-ball spell in the first hour of the day, and the left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who dismissed Alastair Cook with his first ball of the series, and deserved better rewards than his eventual figures of 1 for 67 from 21 overs. With the sun on their backs and a more familiar spin-dominant line-up, Bangladesh settled into the sort of rhythm that they had shown during their home series against England, with the added bonus of a wicket that offered the sort of turn and bounce that they’d never see in Dhaka or Chittagong. With Shakib Al Hasan and Razzak bowling in tandem in a fine spell after tea, England were limited to 29 runs in 16 overs before Matt Prior opened the floodgates with a brace of fours off Razzak – one of which could and should have been caught at slip as Junaid Siddique reacted late to a thick edge. On 18, Prior then survived a raucous appeal for lbw that might well have been overturned had the review system been in place for this match. But Prior lived on, to reach 21 not out at the close. All in all, it was not the sort of scoreline that England had expected, but to Bangladesh’s credit, they used their resources cannily, and kept all the batsman guessing as they beat the bat on both sides on a wicket that will doubtless keep Graeme Swann interested when his opportunity comes later in the match. Kevin Pietersen, in particular, discovered this to his cost, as he was stitched up a treat by his nemesis in Tests, Shakib, who claimed his wicket for the fourth time in as many matches, to bring a flamboyant end an entertaining and aggressive innings.Pietersen’s approach in this series has been a far cry from the tentative return to form that he produced in Bangladesh, and after reaching a 73-ball fifty with a series of thumping strikes in the V between long-off and -on, he seemed in a hurry to reach his first hundred against these opponents. Shakib, however, was equal to his ambitions. Moments after being drilled through the covers for four, he held his delivery back a touch through the air, and Pietersen was stumped by six paces as the ball spat past his edge and into the gloves of Mushfiqur Rahim.Shakib could and should have earned a second wicket in a fine attacking spell, when on 36, Bell edged a good-length turner, only for the ball to rebound unchallenged off Mushfiqur’s knee. But that was the only real chance that Bell offered in a disciplined 171-ball innings. Eoin Morgan also offered one opportunity, in the fifth over after tea, but unfortunately for him, his cramped cut at Shahadat picked out Jahurul Islam in the gully, who clung on one-handed with an outstanding dive to his right. After adding 70 for the fifth wicket to revive England from 153 for 4, Morgan was on his way for 37, another half-formed Test innings to add to his Lord’s 44.The principal performer in the morning session had been Shafiul, who was overlooked for the Lord’s Test despite showing glimpses of his ability back home during England’s recent visit. He pitched the ball up as a default tactic, finding a decent pace in the high 80s to offset a mediocre first spell from the Lord’s hero, Shahadatr, and kept the left-handers Strauss and Alastair Cook on their toes by intermittently switching his line from over to round the wicket. His determination paid off in the 12th over of the day, as Strauss succumbed to an excellent rising delivery that angled across his bows, snicked the edge, and flew hard and fast to Imrul Kayes at second slip. Six balls later, Shafiul added his second, as Trott followed up his double-century at Lord’s by falling victim to an excellent bustling delivery that wormed its way off an inside-edge into the top of middle stump. Trott looked stunned at the dismissal, and took his time to react, but he had gone for 3 from five balls, and at 48 for 2, England were in a touch of strife.Their uncertainty was compounded with 15 minutes of the morning session remaining, when Cook poked injudiciously at Razzak’s first delivery and snicked a regulation edge to Junaid Siddique at slip, and Razzak could well have added a second straightway, had Shakib thought to post a short leg to the incoming Bell. By the time he called upon the extra fielder, however, a looping bat-pad opportunity had already been and gone. With Shafiul struggling through thereafter with cramp, Bangladesh’s effectiveness was dented in the afternoon session, but their determination was undimmed, and by the close they were very much in the contest.

Leeds could sign new Dallas in Alex Scott

Leeds United could sign their new Stuart Dallas this summer in Bristol City starlet Alex Scott…

What’s the story?

According to The Mirror, the Robins rate him at around £10m, and while he is under contract with the club until 2025, their financial issues could see some Premier League clubs look to take advantage.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

It’s added that both Leeds and Spurs have scouted the 18-year-old ahead of a planned summer raid for the midfielder.

Shades of Stuart Dallas

Having played in a number of positions this season for Bristol City – including as a right-sided winger, central midfielder, holding midfielder, a number ten and a second striker – Scott has had a footballing education unlike most teenagers his age.

Indeed, that versatility is something which will surely impress Jesse Marsch, and it will also draw very eye-catching similarities to Leeds’ very own Swiss army knife in Stuart Dallas.

Whether Scott can match that level of impact that the Northern Irishman has had at Elland Road remains to be seen, but it is promising to say the least.

Bristol City’s player pathway manager Brian Tinnion hailed the teenager as “one of the top young talents in the country” before adding: “His work rate and his desire to learn has been unbelievable.

“He has been taken in very well by the senior lads, they know he’s got the quality to play with them. He has every single attribute you would want in a professional footballer. He can tackle, he’s great with both feet, he can head the ball, his delivery is good and his overall quality is great. He lets his football do the talking and he’s getting better all the time.”

Essentially, he is the do-it-all player who Leeds already boast in Dallas.

Given his age, and having already played a number of times in the Championship this season – 37 to be precise – Scott would seem to be a very shrewd addition in the mould of a Joe Gelhardt.

Imagining the prospect of both Scott and Gelhardt leading the way for Leeds over the coming years would be a sight to behold, with both having cut their teeth in the Championship.

The future would certainly be bright at Elland Road with the signing of Scott this summer, and it could give them their long-term successor to Dallas.

AND in other news – Marsch now facing his first major Leeds United mistake, Elland Road will be fuming
